Masterclass options - week Three

Leading with inclusivity for better collaboration

Kosta Bolgov   Group Product Manager , InVision
Jenny Lanier   Senior Design Manager - Compute and Interconnectivity , IBM

Join this interactive masterclass where we will dive into leadership tactics that foster collaboration and unite your cross-functional teams.

Whether your team is fully remote, together in the same room, or a combination of the two, we want to help you create an inclusive environment that sparks creativity, encourages active engagement, and builds trust.

During this session, we'll explore best practices and templates to make your meetings more effective (think brainstorming, sprint planning, journey mapping).

Articulating Design Decisions

Tom Greever   Author of 'Articulating Design Decisions'

Talking to people about design might seem like a basic skill, but it can be difficult to do well. And, in many cases, how you communicate with other designers, stakeholders, clients, or executives is more critical than the designs themselves.

Based on the book Articulating Design Decisions, this masterclass focuses on principles, tactics, and actionable methods for helping you talk about design to other people for the purpose of getting agreement to move forward. Topics include developing empathy for stakeholders, designing better design meetings, and responding to design feedback. You’ll participate in discussion, work on activities, and come away with a toolset of templates and documents to put these principles into practice right away.

Outcome-Based Roadmaps

Bruce McCarthy   Founder , Product Culture

Roadmaps get the blame for over-promising and either delivering late or delivering underwhelming results (or both). In this hands-on masterclass, product leader Bruce McCarthy walks you through his process for building a product roadmap, by establishing your product’s vision and aligning on your product themes, and prioritising your roadmap with business objectives, gaining buy-in across stakeholders, and maximising your team’s impact.

This masterclass is based on his best-selling book “Product Roadmaps Relaunched: Setting Product Direction While Embracing Uncertainty.” Bruce will teach you how to build a product roadmap that works for you and how you can relaunch roadmapping in your organisation.

You’ll take away a roadmap for a fictitious product, new skills and frameworks to help you make your roadmap work for you in your organisation, new connections, and confidence in your roadmap-building abilities.

Facilitating for Hybrid Teams

Laïla von Alvensleben   Head of Culture & Collaboration , MURAL
Jim Kalbach   Chief Evangelist , MURAL

Hybrid, hybrid, hybrid: all signs point to a mixed style of collaboration post pandemic. As companies re-think their work-from-home policies to give employees more flexibility, we'll need to better understand the hybrid condition. In particular, facilitators will have to adjust to groups collaborating from different locations, and some of their past ways to facilitate will have to change. Join this session to begin exploring the future of hybrid facilitation. We'll look at some of the pain points of hybrid facilitation and brainstorm possible solutions together. The output of the session can inform product design, expert facilitation methods, learning content, and more depending on what we re-invent as a group.

Make Better Product Decisions

Joe Leech   Product Coach

This masterclass is all about what to build next, how to plan what to do in a week, in a month and further ahead. How successful product teams make good choices and how you and your team can too.

Joe has interviewed product leaders from around the world from YouTube and Booking.com to Wordpress and Monzo, understanding how they make the choices they do.

Introducing Ethical Explorer

Sarah Drinkwater   Director, Beneficial Tech , Omidyar Network

The techlash has come of age. Media, policymakers and customers are asking harder questions about the role technology plays in society and democracy. Complex topics such as bias in AI or surveillance can seem overwhelming. It can be hard to know where to start. But you - as a designer, product manager or their collaborator - have more power than you think, and everything starts with conversation.
In this interactive session, we'll walk you through the Ethical Explorer, a free toolkit aimed at those building and designing tech to help consider potential harms or brainstorm positive solutions. Whether you're working on a new product or updating an existing system, Ethical Explorer can help you find a way into complex topics, and how you can contribute to a more equitable technology future.
